India » Goa
In terms of area, Goa is the smallest state of the India and in terms of population it is the fourth smallest state of India. Arabian Sea is situated in the Western Coast of Goa while it shares boundaries with the state of Maharashtra in the North and with Karnataka in the East and south. The culture of the state of Goa is highly diverse as compared to other Indian states, due to the geographical differences as well as long term Portuguese colonization in the area. For 450 years, the city of Goa remained colony of Portuguese, until its incorporation in India in the year 1961.The 58 years of Indian amalgamation have not been successful in dispelling the Portuguese influence of more than four centuries. Every nook and corner of Goa is alive with the phases of time it passed through during its long history. The history of Goa goes back to 3rd century BC, when the Mauryan Dynasty was formed in the state of Goa. It was followed by the Mughal invasion in the sub-continent. Goa became a part of Delhi Sultanate in 1312. In the next century, the first European explorer Vasco de Gama set his foot in Goa; this was the first step towards the long term Portuguese colonization, which ended in 1961, when the state of Goa merged with India.
