Panama » Getting to Panama City

Panama City

 "You can get into the Panama City;

  • By air
  • By road
  • By sea
  • By foot

There are not direct flights to the Panama from London."

An approximate flight time to Panama City from London is 14 hours.

By Air

All central, northern and southern American cities are connected with Panama through vast majorities of the Air flights and good budget flight plans.  There are no direct flights to Panama from London. Flights with American carriers such as Delta and American Airlines fly via Atlanta or Miami, and Iberia flies via Madrid. You can reach Tocumen and Los Angeles, Houston, Miami, Atlanta, Havana and all major cities in Central America and Colombia by direct flights.

The Tocumen International airport is on the distance of 35km northeast of Panama City. Travellers can reach within 45 minutes to the airport from the financial district.

Getting to the Panama City

By Road

The main way to Panama is the Pan-American Highway from Costa Rica to Yaviza in Darién state. You can drive across at Paso Canoas (Pacific side). But this rout is not advisable due to the business of the road.

It is very simple to unexpectedly drive throughout the country border without understanding it. The several agencies at the border are arbitrarily dispersed across the border town. So it’s good to do trekking as borders are not visible and the offices and agencies are not look different from the surrounding buildings in any way. You should keep a translator or helper to help you during the travelling between these stations. It’s essential if you don’t speak Spanish.

By Sea

Many cruise lines have the Panama Canal on their route. You can make visits to Panama City and participate in many packages. You can also choose the Panama Canal Railway from Panama to Costa Rica or vice versa. This railway route was established in 1855 and it was the first very long continental train in the American Continent. It has been reconstructed in recent times and it has very nice carts.

It is feasible to organise passage on banana boats moving from Ecuador, Columbia, and Venezuela, but such channel is recommended only for the genuinely adventurous tourists.

This type of travelling is not recommended for general visitors as the boats are mostly unsound as their structure is concentred. These banana bots are mostly use for smuggling drugs as well.

By Foot

It is possible to hike throughout the Darien Gap from Colombia with the assistance of trained guides. But this path is in general believed one of the gravest in the world. A prominent share of efforts have terminated with the trekkers' death as victims of Colombian guerrillas or the harsh jungle surroundings, which are believed the dumbest and hardest to breach in the world.
