New YorkNew York was named by the British to honor the Duke of York and Albany, the brother of England's King Charles II, when New Amsterdam was taken from the Dutch in 1664. New York became the name of the state and the city. New York is called "The Empire State" because of its wealth and variety of resources. The other nickname of New York is "The Excelsior State" which comes from the motto of New York; "Excelsior." New York's motto means "ever upward." New York City is made up of five boroughs - Staten Island, The Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. 

New York City Overview

The main city of New York which is also referred to as "New York City" or "the Big Apple" is at the bottom of the Hudson Valley in New York State. The New York Metropolitan Area extends across four states including lower New York (including parts of Long Island), northern New Jersey, parts of southwestern Connecticut and northeastern Pennsylvania.

It is the USA's enormous metro area, with a population of 18.7 million as of 2007, it was ranked 5th in the world, after Tokyo, Sao Paulo, Mexico City and Seoul. 1.6 million People live within Manhattan. New York also has one of the largest and most famous skylines on earth, ruled by the iconic Empire State Building. Many of the world's largest corporations have their headquarters here. The headquarters of the United Nations is in New York and most countries have a consulate here.

New York is home to more than 500 companies than any other place in the country, the Big Apple is the engine of the US economy.

New York City has a humid continental climate, marked by warm summers and cold winters. New York experiences all four seasons. Average highs for January are around 38°F (3°C) and average highs for July are about 84°F (29°C).
